Mobile games are the fastest growing sector of the gaming industry and, in recent months, indie developers have thrived from our need to game on the go. At the recent Unite 2014 conference in Seattle, CEO of Unity Technologies, David Helgason, pointed the spotlight on what the Unity gaming platform is doing for indie developers and how it is helping them to both save money and increase their revenue. They say the figures don’t lie and Helgason sure did shine a bright light on just how many indie developers are using Unity, with close to 3 million users achieving more than 8.7 billion downloads on their apps, across iOS and Android devices.
Unity has come a long way over the past few years, really proving themselves as an innovative leader in the gaming industry. Just three years ago, Unity had 120, 000 monthly active users, with the figure now recorded to be an impressive 600, 000. And according to Helgason, “That’s really fucking big. I’ll try to limit that [language] in the future. … It’s a big world and a big industry.”
While back in 2011 the company was just beginning to skim the surface of the mobile gaming industry, Helgason now believes that the Unity platform is good enough to contend with the best of them, including industry rivals Unreal Engine and GameMaker, just to name a few.
A strong message from Helgason throughout the Unite 2014 conference was that everything Unity does is to assist the gaming community and that Unity Technologies ultimately feels a responsibility to help developers create the best games possible. “We are an important, enmeshed part of your lives,” he said. “We try our very best to fulfill that. We have a responsibility to lean in and make sure we are slightly ahead of the curve on technology.”
