In what marks the end of an era for mobile gaming, the developers of Infinity Blade announced that today’s content update for the mobile game would be its last. Since its launch into the mobile gaming world in 2010, Infinity Blade has been downloaded more than 50 million times, creating a significant landmark in the history of mobile gaming. But what made the Infinity Blade Trilogy so popular? Initially launching on iOS devices, it was one of the first high-quality animation games that showed us what phones and tablets could really do. The developers set the standard for what was to come, creating the start of the competitive, high-quality mobile gaming industry we have today.
So, what was the inspiration behind this epic game, from the developers at Chair, which is now one of the most successful game development studios? Laura Mustard, Marketing Manager, revealed in a recent interview, “We thought that if we could make a gamer’s game for mobile, then gamers out there might be really interested in playing it.” Donald Mustard continued be saying, “The goal wasn’t to bring the console experience to mobile. It was to answer, ‘What can you do on mobile that you could never do on a console?’ How can we make something that is completely unique to this device that can deliver the rich game experience that I expect when I play?” – And it’s the asking of these questions that brought Chair to the forefront of mobile game development, as the unveiled what would soon be one of the most influential games on iPhone and iPad devices.
What should up and coming indie developers take from this legacy? The attitude that Donald Mustard had when setting out on this unknown adventure – “We were always looking at how to push the envelope further than people thought was possible, and this was a way to do it. Every device and every game has its constraints,” he said. “And to me, the best games embrace their constraints and find creative solutions to get around them.”
