It was only a matter of time until we started hearing chatter about developers kicking around ideas for new games and apps that coincide with the release of the Apple iWatch in 2015. The much anticipated smart watch from Apple revealed a little more of itself during the iPhone 6 launch last week, but you’ll have to hold onto your enthusiasm for nearly a year, with news that the iWatch won’t be hitting our shores until 2015. While it’s definitely impressive in its own special way, is the era of smart watches really upon us and is this going to have a massive impact on app development, like some are predicting?
Tim Cook, Apple CEO, called their latest invention “the most personal device we’ve ever created”. Keeping this in mind, it’s easy to see why many app developers are already kicking the gears into action, as they strive to create apps that can work with the iWatch – after all, if you thought you used your mobile phone a lot, imagine the exposure an app would have if it was on your wrist for at least 12 hours per day.
So, what do we already know from the specs that have been released? The iWatch is going to support health and fitness apps like nothing we’ve ever seen before on iOS devices. From the smart watches we’ve already seen on the market, this is not really a big surprise, with the back case of the iWatch featuring infrared and visible light LED to detect pulse rate, allowing users to better track their workout. This is great news for anyone planning on releasing a health and fitness app in 2015 and I’m sure we’ll also see many updates of existing apps to coincide with the launch.
I’m still on the fence about how much impact the iWatch will have on iOS and Android mobile gaming as a whole, as I can’t really see myself playing a quality game on such a small screen. There has been chatter about developers incorporating certain aspects of a game into the use of the iWatch, however, such as trading goods or tracking your progress more easily, simply with the click of a button on your wrist. One thing’s for certain… the next twelve months is going to be very interesting, as we eagerly await news from the big developers about what they’ve created, in terms of gaming, for the iWatch.
