If you can believe it, it’s been five years since we first started ruining great friendships with intense “Words with Friends” battles – and to celebrate the fifth anniversary (yep, you guessed it!) Zynga has released a new version of the game. While they didn’t really reinvent the wheel with this one, I am pleasantly surprised by the updates, along with the job well done of fixing what needed to be fixed.
You may recall that earlier this year Don Mattrick became the new CEO of Zynga, promising the industry that fresh changes were on the horizon for the gaming giant. While Words with Friends still remains to be one of the most popular mobile games of all time, with a whopping 55 million matches being played at any given time, the legendary title was well overdue for an overhaul, if it hoped to continue competing with the sleek design of new games now on the market.
In a recent interview with GamesBeat, Jonathan Knight, Vice President of Games at Zynga, revealed, “This is the most significant update that has ever been made to the game. We kept the core game the same. There was nothing broken about it. But we’ve added new features that fans have requested.” Releasing such a game changing update at this point in time could have easily been perceived as a dicey move by Zynga, as they risk losing millions of loyal players if they aren’t happy with the changes being made to the iTunes Number 1 Free Game of all time.
In my opinion, one of the best updates to the game would have to be the new inclusion of a dictionary, which allows players to learn new words through fun features such as “word of the day”. There are also great new social aspects incorporated into the game, which are likely to spice up matches around the globe! If you’ve missed out on experiencing this mobile gaming phenomenon thus far, you can now download the New Words with Friends from the App Stores, available on both iOS and Android devices.
