We always say that when it comes to monetization and making it big in the crazy, competitive world of mobile gaming, you must stay one step ahead of the competition. As the industry expands into wearable devices, this statement has never been truer, with the latest study from Juniper Research shining a bright light onto a niche where developers could potentially turn small ideas into big bucks.
While the competition among mobile apps is fierce, with more than 1.2 billion apps being available for iOS users alone, it seems as though developers are yet to create anything outstandingly brilliant for wearable devices. Apple have yet to release their iWatch onto the market, with a launch date set for 2015, however recent reports have predicted that the app market will remain to be very limited, due to the restricted functionality of the new smartwatches. The report states, “[The] range of functionality available means that it is unlikely that a ‘killer app’ for smartwatches would evolve.”
The question now, that many up and coming developers are asking themselves, is how can you create a wearable app that leaves the industry speechless? One thing that wearable devices really have going on is the features that they offer. With the click of a button on your wrist, you can easily see various personal health statistics, data from your favourite apps and even access your incoming calls and messages.
The report concludes by revealing the figures that we were hoping would subside, “High functionality and premium branding means that the average smartwatch price will remain above $200 until 2020 at the earliest.” While smartwatches may cost upwards of $200 for quite a few years to come, it seems as though this won’t slow down the buying market, with a promising prediction that more than 100 million smartwatches will have been purchased and actively worn by 2019.
As an industry, we may still be unsure about the details surrounding capitalization of this new piece of technology, but if we look back just 10 years, we never could have imagined some of the advancements we’ve seen on mobile devices today. The company who develops the first killer app for the latest smartwatch devices is sure to monopolize the wearables market and is likely to make waves by becoming an industry name for generations to come.
