Soon to be new to the app stores is Pttr, an app that helps pets in animal shelters find a home. It works by advertising those pets that are up for adoption on the app, much like a dating site but for animals. The students who designed the app, from Florida International University, designed it as part of a coding competition.
It was intended to reduce the killing rates amongst shelters and the project was completed in less than 48 hours. The app design is one of 38 that have progressed in the competition out of approximately 180 competitors. Kennet Postigo, a freshman from the university explains that Pttr will help families that are looking to adopt a pet find the right match for them.
The app is similar to a shopping platform whereby people can browse available pets based on their personal preferences. The shelters are also able to use the app to upload images of the pets looking for a home. Much like Facebook, the app offers the capability to bookmark animals that they like by clicking a “like” button and this way the potential pet owner knows which ones to look for when they personally visit the shelter.
Although the app in its early stage of developments the developers believe that it has potential to become a global, or at least a national platform. Being limited to Miami-Dade County at current, the app certainly has potential to become widespread.
Coder Thomas Xavier says that “I definitely think this app will save animals’ lives, and if other developers can continue to do things like this, the app could be huge.” The competition will release the results by the End of May. Being for such a wonderful cause, you will no doubt hear about the Pttr app again in the future.
