Will Wright, the creator of The Sims has launched a new game to the market called Thred. Wright has created the likes of Sim City, The Sims and Spore and has now created Thred however this time it is not a game. It is in the extremely competitive category of social photography apps and has initially been released for Apple’s iPhone. The app has full potential being backed by a number of investors including Electronic Arts boss John Riccitiello.
The app offers users functionalities such as adding filters, stickers and captions to their photos. Wright hopes it will be used for purposes such as to create and share memes, create web comics and record holiday trips.
Wright said “One of the fundamental ideas behind Thred is a better way to create and consume content for mobile”. A challenge Thred faces is competing with established brands such as Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram and needs to tempt people away from these popular apps.
To come with the startup is the need for a business model with in-app purchases or advertising if it can attract a large amount of the community. Thred’s website shows a list of 18 employees working for the startups parent company Syntertainment Incorporated, which has already raised $5m in funding.
Although it is quite a change from the gaming world for Wright it is no surprise that he’s made the move, having talked about his interest in creating a photography app since 2008. Wright said that “In recent years, I’ve been drawn more and more to new entertainment forms – ones that lead the user to become more engaged with the world around them, rather than withdrawn from it.”
