The social media platform Ello has now launched an app that will no doubt beat your expectations. Ello is built on the promise that it will have no advertising which to no surprise attracted thousands of users. The service was made invite only which also fuelled demand. Following its launch, the company won over an investment funding of around $10 million.
Early in 2014, however, it seemed that the company failed to deliver what users were looking for in a social experience. Without preparation of the onslaught of users, the site only offered basic functions. These included the ability to follow users and create posts.
The company was sure to bounce back and not even a year later they have launched the new mobile app for iOS users. Both the website and the app offer a simple black-and-white theme. To Ello’s credit, they have since addressed one of the websites flaws of getting your friends onto the app and have now added a feature that enables users to find and invite friends to the network through their contacts. Similar to other social networks, users are able to follow other users, comment on friends’ posts, post content, discover other people on the network and soon to come, a messaging service.
You must be wondering how the service plans to monetise and like any other great company they have a plan. This is to continue to avoid advertising and go down the path of an ecommerce play. Small ventures and artists will be able to post items for sale and Ello will enable the transaction for a percentage cut.
We will no doubt continue to see the service rise in popularity for not only their existing database of millions of users but also for new ones through the launch of their mobile app.
