It has been reported that Hearthstone, the digital card mobile game by Blizzard Entertainment is raking in a staggering $20 million per month, according to SuperData. This puts the game at the top of its genre, even outperforming key competitors such as Dota 2. Dota 2 was reported to have made $18 million in March. 3
In the latter half of 2015, the global market for mobile digital card games is predicted to reach $1.3 billion. That leaves a fair piece of the pie for Hearthstone to represent. According to SuperData, Blizzard’s IP has “transformed the landscape after earning more last year than its three closest competitors combined.”
It is mobile that makes up most of the revenue share for Blizzard and which helped it to reach the top of its genre. The game was launched in April 2015, which was when the revenue and playerbase ultimately peaked.
When compared with PC, there are more users for mobile. For mobile, there are approximately 9 million active players and 8 million for PC.
Joost van Dreunen, CEO of SuperData said in a recent statement “Previously, smartphones were the realm of relatively simple card games like Rage of Bahamut and Marvel: War of Heroes. Highly-complex digital CCGs modelled after tabletop games tended to exclusively target PC and tablet players,”
Hearthstone is available for free download from Apples iTunes Store and Google Play.
