Among only a few to achieve the title, the infamous King’s Candy Crush Saga has released the information that the company is now a ‘billion dollar game’, reaching $1.5 billion in 2013. While there are various articles all over the internet about the addictive puzzle game (and I must even admit I’m guilty of publishing a few myself!) it’s understandable to see the hype of the game from a development and advertising standpoint – whether you actually enjoy the game play or not.
The mobile gaming giant ‘King’s’ has embraced the world of mobile gaming and all that comes with it, which has resulted in the developer being one of the most successful to monetise their mobile application for a lengthy period of time. While we all know that popular apps come and go, usually only gracing the top charts for a few months if they’re lucky, Candy Crush Saga is still recording 93 million daily active users, across both Facebook and mobile platforms. Previous studies into successful techniques to monetise applications have all produced data that provides evidence to the fact that users are more likely to spend money on mobile gaming than any other platform. Mobile gaming users are generally on the move, meaning they’re looking to kill a bit of time and don’t really have anything more exciting happening at that point in time, so they are in turn willing to spend a few dollars for entertainment sake. In 2013, $1.1 billion of the revenue generated from Candy Crush Saga was from that of mobile gamers, across both iOS and Android devices – throw in a bit of math and that’s 73% of their total revenue.
While we’ve all gathered over the past year that King’s Candy Crush Saga is quite a big deal, they’ve officially joined GungHo Online’s Puzzles & Dragons as the only other mobile game to reach the billion dollar mark – life can’t get much sweeter than this for King’s.
