While we’ve heard about the great things happening for the exposure and reputation of mobile gaming over the past twelve months, the figures for the last calendar month are still rolling in – and are as impressive as ever. Worldwide, mobile users for both iOS and Android devices spent triple the amount of the previous year, taking it to a total of $16 Billion spent. AppAnnie and IHS came together to collaborate the results, showing that digital games were easily the largest contributors to the jump up in figures from those of 2012.
On a global scale, consumer spending on mobile applications, games and movies increased by an impressive 30% in the past year. Asia proved, once again, that it is truly the heart of mobile gaming, with a massive number of players in the continent helping to raise the total profits of mobile gaming in 2013, with an outstanding amount of in-app purchases by players. One big piece of news for developers opening up shop is that Game Applications Spending increased by an enormous 4.4 times in Japan and 5.8 times in South Korea – making mobile applications the current and overall leading content category in Japan.
Online games have also generated quite a deal of revenue over the past twelve months, with PC gaming still being the choice of poison for online gamers, however the increase of spending on mobile gaming and applications still makes it one of the fastest growing categories in the industry. As in past years, the statistics for 2013 showed that movie related applications, including various movie player apps and even game applications based on the latest blockbusters, displayed a steady increase in popularity and profits. A few big hits on the app charts from 2013 that you should be familiar with include games based on the hit Despicable Me and the classic Jurassic Park.
If you’re looking to get into the life of mobile gaming or are building the latest new app, the only way to move forward in a positive light is to look back on the past and make smart decisions about marketing, app ideas and global exposure, taking note of the successes in these areas.
