There’s been much hype and gossip since the recent 2014 Game Developer’s Conference, including that of the announcement that Deep Silver, infamous for Saint’s Row IV, will soon be expanding their ventures to free-to-play mobile games, allowing the company to “take advantage of gaming’s fastest-growing category”, according to sources at GamesBeat. Up until this point, Deep Silver, a brand of Koch Media, has been dedicated to bringing gamers some of the biggest console titles. The recent acquisition of gamer developer ‘Fishlabs’, however, has allowed Koch Media to step into the world of mobile gaming, with a statement that the team of 52 developers at ‘Fishlabs’ have already begun creating new releases for the App Stores.
This recent move by Koch Media made some industry professionals revisit the question (or debate more like it) as to whether or not mobile gaming will be the demise of console gaming. In an interview with GamesBeat, however, the CEO of Koch Media and Deep Silver clearly stated “We are convinced the console business will continue to have strong growth ahead. We are staying in that space, but we see our audience of core gamers is spending an increasing amount of time on mobile devices. It’s only logical to move into mobile.”
Adding onto the great news that the innovative company will be broadening their horizons and that of mobile gamers in the near future, Deep Silver also announced a plan to launch a PC-Only, free-to-play game – the first of its kind for the company. Dead Island: Epidemic well and truly jumps on the zombie themed band wagon, but only in a good way of course, where teams of players will battle to the death in order to reach supplies, all while resisting attacks from waves of brain eating zombies.
Thus far, 2014 really has proven to be one of the biggest years for mobile gaming developments. Better graphics, new high stakes players to the table and exciting fresh ideas for games is just the beginning for mobile gamers – let’s see if Deep Silver can take on the competition by bringing something of Saint’s Row standards to mobile gaming.
