Mobile messaging is no longer a thing of the future, as many of you well know, with an abundance of mobile messaging providers taking centre stage in the past year. With so much competition heating up amongst this category of mobile apps, it is no wonder that Tango have decided to take the plunge and gain the edge over other competitors. In a recent announcement, Tango shared the news of their acquisition of the big name puzzle game Words with Friends, which is sure to see a notable leap in the company’s monthly active user’s total.
First released in 2009 by Zynga, it wasn’t long before Words with Friends became a household name all across the world; and with 55 million games of Words with Friends happening at any given time, it’s still making history as the number one free game of all time on the iTunes App Store, according to the team at Venture Beat Games. Taking note of the successes of various mobile messaging companies throughout Asia, Tango is hoping that their acquisition of this puzzle game will increase their exposure and put them in the same race as Facebook for free instant messaging.
When questioned about the acquisition, Richard Rabbat, former general manager for Zynga (and now the VP of platform and advertising at Tango) told Venture Beat Games, “This game engages users on the communications side, letting your friends know that you’re interacting with them during the day.” Exposing yet another company that is following suit on the successful results of a significant number of mobile gaming developers and advertisers who have seen that socializing is something that all mobile gamers crave, ultimately encouraging them to continue playing for longer periods of time. The news of how greater an impact social aspects have on mobile gaming, for both iOS and Android devices, may just influence game play style to increase monetisation and successful marketing in the years to come.
