In a shocking first, the latest figures from 2013 have revealed that Android tablet devices have beat out Apple’s iPad on the market. Gartner unveiled the news in the release of their figures earlier this year, showing that Android can now claim the title of the most popular tablet OS globally. Apple has held this title with increased sales of their iPad device over the past years, but for 2013 a massive 62%, or 121 million, of tablets sold worldwide were Android. The spotlight is well and truly now on Android, with just 36% of all tablets sold being iPad’s.
If it wasn’t enough for Android to simply beat Apple out of its title, in 2012 iPad sales made up just 53% of total tablet sales, in comparison to the 62% mark reached by Android in 2013. This is big news for game developers and could mean many changes to come in 2014, as many games have previously been launched on iOS devices before making the transition to the Android platform. With the latest news that Android tablets are more successful on the sales front, we may just see a reserve of past happenings, with more games being first released on Android.
After such popularity in the past, why have so many users switched to Android tablets? Recent data shows that consumers are weighing up the cost of Apple devices, even though many stills see Apple as the quintessential provider for mobile devices. The study from Gartner showed that it was ‘Low-end, smaller screen’ Android devices that led to the company tripling its number of sales. The tables are turning for popularity amongst mobile devices and if Android wants to keep its top ranking, they will need to keep an eye on Microsoft, with their sales increasing from 1.1 million to 4 million in the past year.
