Gaming heavyweight King cannot seem to stay out of the news in 2014 – if they’re not fighting trademark battles in court, they’re taking over the world with a new hit mobile game – but in this case, King is planning on taking over more than just the charts, as they launch their latest base in Japan. It should come as no surprise to those who know a little something about the mobile gaming industry, as figures for the past year show that Japan’s smartphone gaming market is worth a hefty $5.4 billion, after a massive increase of 178% in 2013, namely due to the sales of iOS and Android devices.
This latest smart move by King is in addition to the 9 other offices already located at hot spots around the globe, including teams in San Francisco, Seoul, Barcelona, Berlin, Malta, and various locations throughout London. The newest Japanese base is packed with just the essential team members for now, with the GM being the esteemed Ken Edahiro, former CMO of Gloops, who is currently looking to expand the in-house team by adding a CTO and new game producer – which leads us to believe that there could be big new things coming out of Japan for King in the coming months.
Candy Crush Saga received phenomenal praise throughout Asia and the latest news of King opening up shop in the Japan follows the release of their second set of television advertisements promoting the hit game. Knowing their target audience a little too well, the team at King have captured viewers’ attention by employing the likes of national celebrities, with their first advertising campaign using Mikako Tabe and their latest campaign seeing the likes of popular boy band heart throb Junichi Okada, alongside actor Kenichi Endo.
As the latest news of this new launch by King hits the streets, mobile gamers everywhere should brace themselves for a new wave of everything King in the closing months of 2014.
