Whether it’s an old classic or has just hit the app store, every week I’m going to bring to you my favourite app, where we’ll analyze everything we love and hate about it! From the graphics, to the game play style created by the developers and even monetisation techniques that work like a charm.
For our first addition of this installment I’ve chosen Pou – as a kid who grew up in the 90s I just couldn’t resist having my own version of an old school Tamagotchi right in the palm of my hand again. If you didn’t have your own pet Tamagotchi when you were a kid, here’s the basic rundown – created in Japan in 1996, this handheld toy saw you taking care of a digital pet, doing everything from cleaning up after it, feeding it, making it healthy when it was sick and even playing games with it. As of 2010, more than 76 million Tamagotchi’s have been sold worldwide, so it’s no wonder that the creative app developers out there decided to recreate this piece of social pop culture.
Pou was developed by Zakeh and has been downloaded by close to 500, 000 million users on Android devices alone. As far as graphics in the mobile gaming world go, Pou has kept it pretty simple, but in saying this, the graphics of this new game are a big step up from those of the original Tamagotchi. The concept of the game is simple, but intriguingly addictive, as you keep heading back to the app to check that your alien pet Pou is nice and clean and doesn’t need to be fed – you wouldn’t want something bad to happen to him after all.
Like many mobile games of our generation, monetisation is achieved through the in-app purchase of extra gold coins. Coins in Pou allow you to purchase different types of food, fun outfits and various accessories for you own little alien pet!
This app is available on both Android and iOS devices, so if you’re a 90s baby and feel like reminiscing about your long lost Tamagotchi, I’d definitely recommend this app for a bit of nostalgic fun.
