After closing the 2013 calendar year on a high note, it may come as a bit of a surprise to many in the industry that the first quarter of 2014 was a bust for mobile and social gaming giant Zynga. This time last year Zynga was releasing a wave of heavy competition in the mobile gaming market, while the latest figures show that year on year the company’s revenue has plummeted by a significant 36% from 2013.
While it’s been a slow start to the year for the infamous developer, the recent launch of the much anticipated Farmville 2: Country Escape on iOS and Android devices should have them back on the right track in no time. The latest installment of the Farmville franchise has already seen more than 4 million downloads in the space of one week across both iOS and Android devices, making up a total of 30% of the first quarter revenue for the company. Zynga Poker has also done its part in creating the $168 million revenue that the company recorded in its first quarter, making up 24% of total sales.
Even with a net loss of $61 million, thanks in part to the weakening of Facebook revenue, Zynga CEO Don Mattrick is not concerned, showing a strong front as he stated, “For the first time in two years, our teams delivered sequential growth across our key performance metrics including bookings, adjusted EBITDA, mobile bookings mix and audience.” Mattrick continued by saying, “We believe these indicators demonstrate our strategy is working and the focus, rigor and discipline of our teams is showing up in our results.”
While they may have experienced tough times in the beginning of 2014, it seems that determination and motivation are on the side of the team at Zynga – so here’s hoping we see big things for the mobile gaming industry in the closing months of the year.
