After its launch back in 2013, many developers and industry professionals were unsure of just how successful Samurai Siege would be. Sure, it possessed many similar traits to the ever popular Clash of Clans, but would this work in the games favour or be something that stood in the way of success? The latest release of figures from Space Ape Games, the London based creator of the game, have shown that going with what you know really can pay off, with more than 5.5 million downloads reached since its launch, combined with an impressive $12 million in revenue.
Samurai Siege was destined for big things from the very beginning, being downloaded nearly 1 million times in just its first week. The game also smashed the charts and bought in the big bucks for Space Ace Games, averaging an intake of $65, 000 per day. While they started with a bang, many had their doubts as to whether this was a short jump to the top of the charts or if the Samurai Siege was in it for the long haul, but now, six months after the initial launch date, the addictive strategy game is the top grossing game in its category in more than 40 countries around the world and has made it into the top 5 highest grossing strategy games for an impressive 136 countries.
With such an unbelievable amount of downloads, you would expect some bad press or shocking reviews by this stage in the game, but Samurai Siege is sitting happy with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 – impressive to say the least.
Mobile game developers, particularly those planning on launching a strategy game into the charts, should look to Space Ape Games for wisdom, as the free-to-play game seems to have mastered the technique of successful monetisation through in-app purchases in both the iOS and Android App Stores.
