Late last year Apple acquired a new company called Dryft, a startup that develops keyboard apps. Randy Marsden, Chief Technology Officer of Dryft, recently changed his profile as having joined Apple last September as proof of the merger. He now leads the development for Apple’s internal keyboard development. While financial terms of the deal are unavailable it is uncertain as to whether Apple acquired Dryft for Marsden’s particular skills and talents or its assets.
Dryft offers a unique way of creating an on-screen keyboard and it shows only when the user touches the display. It essentially tracks your fingers’ movements and since its release to iOS8 Apple has allowed developers to tamper with the keyboard introducing many other startups such as SwiftKey and Swype.
Google Play store customised keyboards are amongst the most popular and highest growing apps which prompted Apple to seek such an acquisition. The Android customised keyboard initially gave itself a competitive advantage over Apple. This all changed when iOS for Apple was released and keyboard apps rose to the top of the Apple Store charts.
