A recent report from the one and only App Annie has revealed that Google Play is continuing to give the iTunes Store a run for its money. The latest figures show that Android gamers sure do love to spend, with the Google Play App Store revealing that more than 90% of its first quarter revenue was made up of money spent on games. Another great accomplishment for Google Play and a truly jaw-dropping figure is that the revenue achieved has more than doubled since this time last year.
While in the past we’ve noticed the trend of many developers first launching their games exclusively on iOS devices, I’m left asking myself if we’ll see a change in this trend as the year progresses, particularly after the release of these new figures. Something very interesting that has also be revealed by these latest figures from App Annie, is that while 90% of Google Play revenue consisted of money spent on games, it was free to play games that were raking in the big bucks. In other words, the money being spent on games is not by the initial download cost, but by the following enticements of in-app purchases. In May 2014 alone, free-to-play game applications made up a whopping 98% of the month’s revenue.
Mobile giant Apple might have to watch their back, as it’s becoming more and more apparent as each year, and even each quarter, passes Google Play are continuing to grow, by surpassing all previous accomplishments with greater revenue and better app choices. When comparing to this time last year, Google Play has grown by adding 60% more apps to their store and, according to App Annie, there are now “well over one million apps available on the Google Play store.”
