Since the beginning of mobile gaming, Apple and it’s various products have dominated the field for all things app related. From the thriving iTunes Store to the “iOS only” app releases, it’s clear to see that up until this point in time, there have been many benefits for iOS users. Over the past few years, however, GoogePlay has really stepped it up a notch when it comes to their games and even their store, gaining more and more exposure at a steady rate. While they’ve always had the tools to do just as well for Android as Apple does for iOS, GooglePlay have not yet shown that they can really compete with this mobile gaming giant – but it looks like things are just about to change.
The recent Game Developer’s Conference in Can Francisco has seen GooglePlay Games initiating a buzz amongst developers that have them seeing just why focusing on releasing their newest apps in GooglePlay and on Android devices may be beneficial to overall growth and monetisation of their product. Google is also sponsoring the Developer Day at GDC and have released various statements to developers and the media regarding improvements that they intend to make to GooglePlay Games, which are promised to be appealing to be industry professionals and gamers alike.
Many of the great new features that Google will be adding to their list of improvements are centred around making mobile gaming more social – an issue that has been widely discussed after the records and results of 2013 were released. Utilising Google+, gamers will be able to claim ‘game prizes’ either for themselves or to send to anyone within their Google+ circle of friends. Direct multiplayer invites are also a massive part of this new initiative, which will allow Android users to share their latest favourite game with friends and family members. The launch of 18 new categories in the store, including a ‘music game category’ and an ‘RPG category’, is also set to be one of the highlights for Android users in the coming months.
