Following on from my post yesterday, which discussed the launch of the Apple iWatch and what this will mean for mobile gaming, Electronic Arts (EA) have announced that they have some exciting developments in the works, focusing purely on a wearable experience for gamers. While we’ve heard chatter from other developers attempting to hone in on the latest in on-the-move gaming experiences, it’s exciting to see one of the world’s biggest developers taking on the newest challenge in the market.
Most talk surrounding apps on the iWatch have been from the health and fitness category, which seems like an obvious leap from the smartphone. EA, however, are known for their work in sports, strategy, city building and puzzle games on iOS and Android devices.
So, how exactly is EA going to bring a strategy or city building game to your wrist? Simple. Rather than trying to incorporate the entire gaming experience into the iWatch, game accessibility will be increased by allowing players to have access to certain crucial elements of a game, without having to pull out their smartphone. The two development teams at EA, who have been employed solely to create wearable experiences for 2015, have revealed that they’ll be focusing on syncing the iWatch with mobile games, allowing crafting and auction trading from the new device.
In a recent interview, EA Mobile EVP, Frank Gibeau, revealed his confidence in the product, saying, “There’s a trend here where wearables are going to increase in performance, capability and unique functions over time that we believe will enable gaming experiences.”
Only time will tell just how much the latest in smartwatch technology can change the mobile gaming industry, but one thing’s for sure, 2015 is already shaping up to be the biggest year in mobile gaming yet.
