Traditionally, the highest revenue generating and most popular mobile apps have been games. In China, a staggering 81% of the top 100 grossing apps were games in the second quarter of 2015. In the US, games are predicted to represent 78% of the top grossing apps in the current quarter and are expected to reach record global revenues in 2015.
Recent studies have proven that mobile gaming apps will continue to show strength globally. Strategy Analytics, the research and consulting firm recently made a statement that the revenue driver “continues to rest with the gaming companies that have used the freemium model to dominate the top grossing charts across the globe.” Joshua Martin, the chief research said there has been “enormous growth of the apps market—which we forecast to exceed 100B downloads in 2015. While some companies face challenges ahead, one thing is for certain—it’s good to be a gaming company right now.”
In the gaming category for the six countries provided in the study, including Germany, France, China, Brazil, the UK and the US, rankings dropped slightly as the top grossing app in the iTunes store. In the second quarter for China, iphone games represented 81% of the top grossing apps. For Brazil, the gaming apps represented over 50% of the top grossing iPhone apps and for Germany, France and the UK it represented over 60% in the same category. In the US, gaming apps were nearly 50% of the revenues for the top grossing apps.
It is a great industry be to be in and we will no doubt see the gaming apps revenue continue to climb in the coming years.
