While we’re all aware of the great success King has had across both the mobile gaming and social media fronts, the news of the company making up 25% of Facebook’s total game revenue may still come as a shock. Known widely for what many considered to be their ‘one hit wonder’, Candy Crush Saga, it now seems that King has not only gained popularity through this game, but a number of their other hits, including Pet Rescue Saga, Bubble Witch Saga and Farm Heroes Saga.
Ranked by MAU’s (Monthly Active Users) on Facebook, “King has been the most successful developer to leverage the Facebook app ecosystem to build its business across all platforms.” Following close behind in the top 5 most highly ranked apps was Spotify and Microsoft Live. While Candy Crush Saga, Pet Rescue Saga and Farm Heroes Saga were all released in 2012 and 2013, it is clear to see that they still monopolise much of the popularity of gaming apps across iOS, Android and Facebook.
King has also dominated a great deal of media attention in the mobile gaming industry, namely due to the headlines of filing for a trademark of the word “candy”. While this news shone both a positive and negative light onto the company, it seems that the saying ‘all publicity is good publicity’ rings true – at least for King. The various puzzle games from King show many similarities, which may be one factor that contributes to three of their best products maintaining high rankings. Not only are the games addictive and reward players for completing levels, but they also offer a social aspect, which has clearly been a great motivator for gaining success across both mobile and social networking platforms. Monetisation strategies used throughout all three of their top games are successful and so now it seems the sky really is the limit for King.
