Being launched globally is the new “Lite” version of the Line messaging app service. The Line company, which is based out of Japan, operates across a number of verticals, offering mobile payments, camera apps and games.
In more than 200 countries the company claims a total of over 200 million active users for the messaging app alone. The majority of these users exist in certain countries in Asia.
The Lite, Line app is currently available to Android users and there has been no indication it will be rolling out for iOS users in the near future. The size of the app is less than 1MB and is designed for markets where the network is slower or smartphones are less powerful. It brings the core features of the Line app to users such as texts and stickers. The app however, does not offer features such as video calls and audio. It will download in one twentieth of the time of the Line app.
Line Lite has been launched mainly across Asia and Africa – across 11 markets initially.
It was the high demand of the standard Line app that brought great demand for the light version. The company said in a recent statement that “We’ll keep working to bring the fun and convenience of LINE to more users around the world!”.
You may remember from one of our previous articles that other companies such as Facebook had jumped on the bandwagon much sooner having brought out the Lite version of its app to emerging markets in June.
The Line “Lite” is available for free download from the Google Play store.
