Since the boom of mobile gaming just a few short years ago, there has been an increasing rivalry between mobile and console gaming, with many predicting a gloomy future for consoles, saying that it will only be a matter of time before mobile wipes out that aspect of the industry all together. Personally, I’ve been very on the fence about this issue since day one, because as much as I enjoy mobile gaming, I can’t see how it will ever replace console gaming. A recent survey conducted by the Entertainment Software Association in the United States may restore your faith in the gaming industry, as it shines a new light onto the situation, revealing the impact that mobile gaming really has on the industry as a whole.
The easiest way to understand the influence that mobile gaming is having on consoles, is to think of it as a gateway drug. A massive 22% of mobile gamers revealed that they would never have considered themselves as a “gamer” in the past, with 42% of those surveyed also saying that they’ve purchased a console or PC game because they enjoyed the mobile version so much. While we once thought that mobile gaming would be the end of console gaming, it seems as though these fun portable devices are in fact having the opposite effect on the industry. Another figure that restores our faith in humanity is that two thirds of the gamers interviewed also revealed that their time spent playing mobile games has not taken away from the time they would generally spend on a console.
Michael Gallagher, CEO of the Entertainment Software Association, said, “The tremendous growth of mobile gameplay underscores the dynamic and evolving nature of the video game industry.” He continued by saying, “Consumers want the ability to play anywhere. Our industry continues to anticipate and meet consumers’ expectations by finding new ways to engage users across multiple platforms.”
What people have to remember is that the environment in which you indulge in mobile games and console games differs greatly. While you may spend multiple hours per day on you mobile, you are more likely to play iOS and Android games when you’re on the move – waiting to meet a friend, riding the bus or during your lunch break. Basically, implementing this theory provides an understanding as to why the increase in mobile gaming figures will not mean the demise of console gaming as we know it.
