Parents are warned against using the new Teensafe app to watch over their childrens smartphone activity
Coming soon to Australia is the new app Teensafe, designed to allow parents to monitor their children’s text messages, call history and internet use. The app has over 1 million users already in the US but police are warning users that it is not a silver bullet option to protect from online predators and feel the app may rather simply breach trust between children and their parents.
Detective Jon Rouse claims that parents should communicate the risks involved to their children and learn more about the social media that they are using. He feels that it is strongly breaching what should be trust between parents and their children. After using a similar app for his child for a short period, he claims that after learning the betrayal that was felt by his daughter he would never use the app again.
Teensafe’s CEO, Rawdon Messenger has recently visited Australia to help to promote the app and believes that it’s about open communication and that parents should tell their children about the app and if not, they should use it carefully. There is approximately 80% usage amongst teens and Mr Messenger says that parents should be prepared. “We thoroughly believe that privacy is trumped by safety” he says.
