In a recent interview with Pocket Gamer Connects, international legends Rovio revealed that most of the games for their publishing label are found through exposure at mobile gaming events and conferences. In the interview with PGC, Senior Manager of Publishing at Rovio, Matthew Wilson, honed in on just how important it is for Indie developers to gain exposure through gaming events and even via various game sites on the web.
Wilson continued the interview by stressing the importance of quality, rather than quantity for the company, saying that Rovio is looking to release just a handful of great free to play games per year, rather than an abundance of average mobile games. In the current times of just about anything being released onto mobile devices, as long as it can bring in the big bucks (quality or not) it’s good to know that some publishers are still intent on bringing us show stopping games. “If you want to work with us, you really need games with strong characters and a good narrative,” added Wilson, outlining the love of merchandising their favourite games, such as the ever popular Angry Birds saga.
So, for all the budding Indie developers out there, what’s the one piece of advice you should take away from Matthew Wilson’s interview with Pocket Gamer Connects? “It’s about building the universe pivot. If you think about Lord of the Rings, everything revolves around the Ring, and if you think of The Matrixeverything revolves around The Matrix. It’s about having the right universe pivot that you can build a brand around if the game succeeds.”
This interview may have a few developers for both iOS and Android devices heading back to the drawing board with some new ideas about future marketing campaigns, in the hopes of acquiring a big time publisher for their latest creations.
