Sure, we’ve heard all about the new aspects of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but have you thought about what this means for the future of mobile gaming? There’s always been a healthy rivalry between iOS and Android operating systems and if you’ve ever been on the fence about which is better, the new features of the iPhone 6 may just be enough to sway you. It’s being called “the biggest advancement in iPhone history” – and while I’ve never been a huge Apple fan, they’ve really bought some amazing things to the table, as far as providing developers with the canvas necessary to create mind-blowing games.
One of the most obvious changes to the new iPhones are the larger screens. Many iOS users have had a bit of screen envy over the past few years, since the release of the bigger android devices, which have proven to be incredibly popular amongst users. The iPhone 6 is now donning a 4.7 inch diagonal screen (quite a big leap from the 4 inch iPhone 5), while the iPhone 6 Plus is definitely heading into phablet territory with a massive 5.5 inch display. Size does matter, but what’s really exciting about this advancement it that they’re both supported by Apple’s “Retina HD” – the thing that’s going to make your games bigger, sharper and more enhanced.
The new A8 Chip is something for both gamers and developers to get excited about too, offering significant improvements from that of the chip powering the iPhone 5, with 20% faster CPU and 50% faster graphics. If you haven’t yet been caught up in the hype of it all, you may still be a little skeptical of just how much this is really going to change gaming, but industry professional in attendance at the launch were blown away by just how much smoother and sharper game play really was.
If you’re an app developer, but not so much for the gaming side of things, you may be more interested in the developments of the M8 co-processor, which will access data from the phone’s accelerometer, compass and the new barometer, which assists in measuring elevation. This means big things for perfecting geographical location services, particularly those used in health and fitness applications, which are becoming increasingly popular on both iOS and Android devices.
For those of you who simply cannot wait to get your hands on one of these new iPhone’s, you’ll be happy to hear that preordering starts tomorrow, while the official launch date is set for 19th September 2014.
