Proving that the digital card game era is definitely upon us, WWE SuperCard shows how it’s really done, surpassing 1.5 million downloads during its first week in the App Store. The free-to-play digital card game market is now said to be valued at a cool $20 billion in 2014 alone. As with most of the card battle games on both the iTunes and Google Play App Stores, WWE SuperCard is completely free to download, but does offer the ability to upgrade faster through in-app purchases, helping to rapidly increase its profitability on both iOS and Android devices.
In a recent interview with Venture Beat, Vice President of 2K Chris Snyder revealed, “In less than one week, WWE SuperCard broke 2K’s [existing download] records and became one of the company’s most popular free-to-play games to date.” Snyder continued by saying, “WWE SuperCard is a fun, engaging and addictive game for mobile game enthusiasts, WWE fans, and card collectors alike, bringing the larger-than-life action of WWE straight to their mobile devices to engage with at home or on-the-go.”
We’ve seen that when big name organisations, brands, television shows or movies combine with a well devised mobile game, the revenue can ultimately be sky high. Not only is WWE an already incredibly popular franchise, but 2K has honed in on the very popular current craze of digital card battle games, to create what is becoming an unstoppable duo.
While it may be 2K’s most popular casual game on the App Stores, it’s still only sitting at number 148 on the free to play charts, so if it’s hoping to make a name for itself in the industry, like Boom Beach or Clash of Clans, it will have to maintain its record breaking first week in both downloads and revenue.
